Programming is an art. To be a good programmer you must learn a variety of programming languages. As a beginner, you can learn Python, as it is simple (but not a toy). Then move on to C, the core of Unix, Linux and many other OSs. C is not for beginners, so i recommend it after Python. Then in for web's markup language, HTML. Then learn xHTML. Java is another language worth learning. Then the serious programmer may want to learn PHP also. Perl should be learnt by those who would like to become Linux or Unix admins. Atleast learn to read Perl. Then learn LISP. Lisp may not earn you money, but the experience and enlightment it gives is great. I didn't mention some languages that you may find important. Remember, programming is half art, half technology. It signifies the way a programmer thinks. So opinions may vary. (please feel free to ask me your doubts) *
